Tajikistan’s trade and hospitality sectors show explosive growth
The Republic of Tajikistan is experiencing confident expansion of its consumer sector. According to official data from the Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the country’s key governmental body responsible for the collection of statistical information, the first five months of 2026 saw a substantial surge in consumption volumes in the economy.
Based on the published reports for the period from January to May of the current year, the main economic indicators showed the following dynamics:

Wholesale and retail trade, as well as motor vehicle repair services. The combined turnover reached 35.6672 billion somoni. In comparable prices, this indicator increased by 24.3% (or by 7.1033 billion somoni) compared with the same period in 2025.

Food service and hotel business. Turnover in this segment amounted to 2.0031 billion somoni, exceeding last year’s figure by a record 52.7%.

Fee‑based services sector. The total volume of services provided across all branches of the economy is estimated at 12.9938 billion somoni, representing growth of 9.0%. At the same time, the price index stood at 106.1%. The lion’s share of all commercial services — 9.1034 billion somoni (70.1%) — fell on paid services rendered directly to the country’s population.
“A significant increase in trade turnover is evidence of the development of entrepreneurial activity, the expansion of the consumer market, and growing demand among the population for goods and services. The presented indicators confirm that the positive trend in the development of the domestic market is being maintained,” the press service of the Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan stated.
Outlook for Chinese businesses
For Chinese investors and manufacturers of fast‑moving consumer goods (FMCG), the rapid growth of retail trade (+24.3%) and the restaurant sector (+52.7%) in Tajikistan is a powerful economic signal of rising purchasing power among the local population.
