Imports of Chinese Grapes Through Zabaikalsk Grew by 16% in 2026
Since the beginning of 2026, the import volume of fresh grapes from China to Russia through the temporary storage warehouse and the Zabaikalsk multilateral automobile checkpoint has reached 5.3 thousand tons. This is a 16% increase compared to the same period last year, when the delivery volume was 4.6 thousand tons.
The import of high-phytosanitary-risk quarantine products, which includes grapes, into the Russian Federation is strictly regulated. The main condition for crossing the border is the presence of an international phytosanitary certificate issued by the national service of the exporting country. Each batch undergoes mandatory control by Rosselkhoznadzor inspectors and laboratory testing.
During phytosanitary monitoring since the beginning of 2026, two cases of product infestation with the Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Perg.), a dangerous quarantine pest, were recorded. The total weight of the infested grapes amounted to 2.1 tons. In accordance with safety regulations, the products were subjected to special treatment with approved preparations, which completely eliminated the risk of the pest spreading across Russia and allowed the goods to be cleared for sale.
The steady growth in deliveries of Chinese grapes (+16% YoY) through the Far Eastern logistics corridor highlights the importance of the Zabaikalsk checkpoint as a key artery for food imports from the PRC. The increased volume of fresh fruit and berry supplies (the fresh category) requires importers to pay heightened attention to phytosanitary risks. The detection of quarantine objects, such as the Western flower thrips, demonstrates the high efficiency of Rosselkhoznadzor's border control. For logistics companies and FMCG distributors, this necessitates factoring potential time and financial costs for cargo quarantine treatment (fumigation) at temporary storage warehouses into their business models.
